Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and alarmingly, rates of drowning deaths have been rising in recent years. That’s why child health and injury prevention experts emphasize the importance of early swim lessons. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), children should start swim lessons as early as age 1 to help minimize drowning risk.

Early swim lessons aren’t just about learning strokes, they focus on water competency: essential skills such as floating, getting to the edge of the pool safely, and understanding basic water safety. These skills give children the confidence and ability to respond in water-related situations.

Why Parent Participation Matters

Learning to swim is a team effort between instructors, children, and parents. Our instructors don’t just teach your child, they teach you. Parents play a critical role in reinforcing skills outside of lessons, and our instructors ensure you feel confident practicing techniques with your child at home.

What We Teach

At Penguin’s Swim School, we focus on three foundational skills:

  • Water Comfort: Helping children feel safe and relaxed in the water.

  • Floating: Teaching children how to stay afloat and conserve energy.

  • Safety Flip: Guiding children on how to roll onto their back and reach the edge safely.

These skills are taught in steps, gradually building your child’s confidence. We understand that there are challenges along the way; crying, discomfort, or the initial unease of being held by an instructor rather than a parent. Our instructors bring a warm and calming presence to every lesson, making each child feel safe and supported.

The Benefits of Starting Early

From experience, children who start swim lessons early tend to have less fear of the water and progress faster in their skills. When lessons begin later, a common hurdle is overcoming water anxiety. Much of the lesson time can then be spent building comfort and trust instead of advancing skills. Starting early gives children a head start, turning fear into confidence and learning into fun.

Early swim lessons are more than just swimming, they’re life-saving skills. Starting at a young age gives your child the safety, confidence, and comfort in the water that can last a lifetime.
